Our History & Campus

Akiba-Schechter Jewish Day School

Akiba-Schechter was established as a unique venture in Jewish education when Akiba South Side Jewish Day School and Solomon Schechter South Side School joined forces in 1972.

Akiba South Side Day School (founded in 1949) and Solomon Schechter South Side School (founded in 1965) believed the merger was the best way to perpetuate Jewish day school education on Chicago’s South Side.

In April 2005, Akiba-Schechter moved into a striking new elementary school designed by John Ronan Architects. In September 2007, we completed our campus with the Coleman Family Playground themed around cycles of the moon in reference to the Jewish calendar. Akiba-Schechter Jewish Day School

Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
(Leviticus 19:18)

Community, Identity, Jewish Traditions, Guiding Principles.

Our Core Values

We value teaching children, not subjects.
Teach each child according to their way. Even when they grow old, they will not turn away from it. (Proverbs 22:6)

Our teachers partner with families to know each child and develop strategies to reach and stretch every student. We focus on implementing creative and innovative ideas that foster intellectual, spiritual, and social growth and promote academic excellence. Project-based learning and assessments are central to our philosophy.

We value joyful Judaism.
Serve God with happiness, come from Him with joyful song. (Psalms 100:2)

We strive to create positive Jewish experiences in and out of the classroom where a strong Jewish identity is built, a love and connection to the learning of Torah occurs, joyful performance of Mitzvot (Jewish commandments) and Chesed (acts of kindness) is created, and where a love and positive relationship with Israel and its people are made.

We value Community.
How wonderful and pleasant it is for people to live together in unity. (Psalms 133:1)

We appreciate, value, and respect the many different cultures and faiths represented in our early childhood program. Likewise, we honor and respect the many ways our families identify and practice as Jews. One third of our grade school families identify as Modern Orthodox, one third affiliate with all other denominations, and one third are Just Jewish. We believe we are stronger together than apart. We strive to promote Jewish community, celebrate individual spirituality and honor our shared heritage, commitment to Mitzvot and Halacha (Jewish law).

We value Respect for all Humanity.
Love your neighbor as you love yourself. (Leviticus 19:18)

We love and respect all humanity and creation. We believe everyone was created in the image of G-d and has inherent holiness. We teach and model kindness to every individual and the world.

Our MIssion

We seek to promote academic excellence and develop students with strong Jewish identities.

By focusing on the individual gifts and needs of each student, our teachers create a caring family of learners who are committed to responsible citizenship and the performance of mitzvot.
